Photo Experiment #1

Tonight I’m going to try a personal photo assignment experiment. I’ve got my film camera with me and I’m going to ask people to tell me what to shoot. I’ll be cruising around town and just do it wherever I happen to be. If you’d like to make a request, just twitter me (@x) and I’ll see what I can do. Since it’s film – the results will be delayed and posted in the future.  Fire the requests away!

Dengue Fever @ the Rickshaw Stop

Dengue Fever @ the Rickshaw Stop

When I first heard Chhom Nimol’s melifluous voice on NPR on a story about Dengue Fever, I was attending Strictly Business 2 in Long Beach, CA right where she was discovered in a nightclub in Little Phnom Penh area which was very close to the hotel where the conference was held.  All quite serendipitous and here they were playing in San Francisco at the Rickshaw Stop.  Luckily I bought tickets before it sold out and got to check them out and they definitely are recommended if you get a chance to see them.

Life in the South

Whenever I go home I notice different things; here are my most recent observations…

– Southerners value family and actually hang out with their parents more than others

– Black and white mix a lot more – perhaps that’s because there are more of both, but it’s nice to see that almost everywhere

– but… racial tension is also still pretty present

– everyone drinks! People go to bars more than clubs; of course the lack of nightclubs in rural towns is part of that equation too.

– everyone is a football fan (this pertains more in Alabama where I’m from where the Auburn vs. Alabama rivarly dominates) – it is coolto be able to talk football with pretty much anyone.

– people don’t stay through credits at the movies – everyone pretty much gets up right when the credits start to roll.
