Juxtapozed Living

Salsa dancing

Finished watching 24 Hour Party People with Kora which was a flick on my old ‘to see’ list that fell off it more for the reason that I don’t keep it on paper anymore than any other reason.

Having visited Manchester just to experience it, it was nice to get a little backstory on Factory Records, the Hacienda, etc.

Made me think about the juxtapozed lifestyle I lead being in one city then another and as in the case of this week for myself, three in three different time zones. Within less than a 12-hour period in Denver, I experienced photographing…

Alien life and time travel

Raelians at the 9/11 show at GG Park

So seeing the Raelians demonstrating this past Saturday in Golden Gate Park tied in well with my night out with Kara where we went to see Donnie Darko, the Director’s Cut.

I had so many friends suggesting that I see that flick and I am glad that I did. I just went through the website on a work break and it’s pretty neat. I will have to revisit that smurf philosophy section on the DVD version. I’m hoping a lot more people will see the film now that it’s in theaters again. I am interested in seeing the original version too since I suspect it’s also quite good and the Echo and the Bunnymen vs. INXS I’d like to decide for myself…

Turkey Day

Kora tries on a fitted jacket

So Kora comes by this morning to surf the web and grab brunch and we swing by Just for You which has a long ass line and instead opt for Sally’s and chow down. Afterwards, we decided to go bowling but get sidetracked to check out a sample sale on my street.

Once we started bowling, I was doing miserably since I hadn’t gone bowling for so long. I think I left every frame open (not even a spare) until the 9th frame and then proceeded to convert what was, I think, my first ever turkey. The third frame of the 10th frame was for my fourth strike in a row (which I am not sure what that’s called), but alas, it was not to be.

my first turkey, accompanied by way too many gutter balls!

Finally we walked over to the MOMA where Kora gave me modern art lessons and we both lamented some of the postmodern art trends.

SoCal living…

Brenda Smith lounges in the pool
A quick trip down to Southern California and the differences are so obvious. My first stop was Palm Springs and it was pretty much how I might have imagined it there in the desert. Brenda and Hyacinth lounged by the pool in the afternoon heat – a regular occurance…
Hiyacynth the artist

Toys of the rich and famous became our photoshoot props. I also used real guns, swords, Harley-Davidsons and more. Stuff is so prevalent in SoCal – such a symbol for status.

However, my most enlightening experience was probably meeting Rick Valente who was/is on Bodyshaping on ESPN for the last 20-years. A former bodybuilder who turned into minor celebrity, I had some thoughts on what he might be like before meeting, and was more than pleasantly surprised that he was incredibly grounded and had a very solid outlook on living in the present moment and shared similar philosophies on life – who would have thought!

Can’t escape the past…

So I go to Edmonton, Canada and on my trip I run into two old CKSers in one form or another. First as I am off to the Fairmont for a shoot with Debbie Leung, I come across a statue of Robert Burns. I didn’t know he had such a rich history.

Then while I am awaiting my delayed flight back to SFO from SEA, I hear an announcement from the next gate for Austin Hurwitz. I peer over and see him there and stop him after he leaves the counter to catch up. Turns out he’s down in SoCal and also stays in touch with Marcy Boltz-Walker who apparently is taking a go at the acting world.

mmm, vodka

Shot an event for Ciroc tonight and it wouldn’t have been a party until something broke…

August 30 – Joseph Goldstein
“Listening itself is an art. When we listen with a still and concentrated mind, it’s possible to actually be responsive to what the words are saying. Sometimes deep insights come in a flash, unexpectedly.”

dreams 2

was checking the NY Times Magazine and they had an article on lucid dreaming (link). It’s something I have an interest in so I figured I’d check it out finally tonight and have decided to try and have a lucid dream tonight.

Since I finally remembered a dream for the first time in a while, I figure I am primed. I tried to get some inspiration from the pix I took tonight and this one was my second choice…

Flim flam film fun

Julie applies lip ‘plumping’ stuff as Candace watches on

Sunday I went to have lunch with Julie at the Slow Club, which I like although I’ve only been there once before. This time it was really brunch and the service lived up to the restaurant’s namesake. It was good nonetheless, as was the company.

Afterwards, we went to GG Park for the Sunset Party and grabbed a six pack of Sierra Nevada Summerfest since it was gloriously sunny in Potrero/SOMA. Of course as we cruised up Haight it started to get foggy and it was all foggy and San Francisco-ish at the party.

Afterwards we had some Vietnamese at PPQ off 25th Ave and Julie went to see Spiderman. I’ve heard good stuff about the flick so I want to check it out – just wish they’d put it on the IMAX at the Metreon.
