San Francisco’s Best Burger?

Spruce burger review

Do you like burgers?  I love ’em so when we saw that 7×7 Magazine had done their top twenty burgers in San Francisco, we decided to try out their top ten and do our own evaluation.  Now, these are more the cloth-napkin type of establishments where the top ten were chosen from so my dining companions @a and @sfgirl went through them together and we have arrived at our final judgments.

If you are interested in my general favorite burger list (which as of this posting has not been updated to reflect these last ten burgers, check it out here.  That’ll give you an idea for the types of burgers I like (Pearl’s, In-n-Out, Bullshead, Zeitgeist for example)  so you can determine whether my reviews of these other higher-end burgers is relevant to your tastes.

Best Burgers in San Francisco (based on 7×7’s reviews*):
1) Bix
2) Spork
3 tie) Mission Beach Cafe, Fish and Farm, NOPA
6 tie) Namu & Spruce (shown above)
8 ) Zuni Cafe
9) Orson
10) Serpentine

And this list posted on Yelp is here (where you can read in more detail about each of the dining experiences).

* we substituted Orson for Acme Chophouse, since Acme no longer exists.  Why not Slow Club?  Well, we had all already eaten there before so we chose Orson b/c of the many high ratings it’s gotten like from Michael Bauer, the Chronicle’s food writer.

What’s the best thing to eat before a photoshoot outdoors in the sun?  An In-n-Out Burger Double Double of course.  So we had to drive down to Watsonville for our shoot at Driscoll’s and the Gilroy In-n-Out Burger was the perfect pit stop.  It was so nice and sunny and we got here early so it wasn’t even that busy!  Oh and those are animal style fries (extra crispy) in the background, which Vicki recommended and that Natalie tried for the first time… mmm…

Thank you Jetblue for the $9 flight down to Long Beach from San Francisco.  It also enabled me to get this one last In-n-Out Burger since there was one in Long Beach not far from LGB.  I almost felt it was too much to have yet another Double Double, but knowing that I’d be rental car-less for a while I thought it best to go ahead and have one more. This one seemed a little sloppy on the secret sauce, and I imagine Harry Snyder might not have approved.  At least it tasted swell!

Well, well, well, this was one of the ones I had to check out and I was pretty amped to finally make it out to the Kanner Architects designed Westwood location. This spot is pretty choice since there are tons of UCLA coeds swarming the area and of course the design of this one is really pretty sweet.  Apparently, according to the In-n-Out Burger Wikipedia page, it’s one of the few variances from the ‘templates’ that most of the In-n-Out Burgers fit into.  The others are our own Fisherman’s Wharf location and one in Santa Clarita, north of LA.  The actual drive-thru of this location is pretty random.  I wasn’t using it but realized afterwards that you pretty much need to know where the entrance for the drive thru is before you get here since it’s some random alley without a sign.  Back to the actual burger, it was  spot on as usual and it was definitely the most fun actual location to eat my genex style double double!

Sherman Oaks’ In-n-Out Burger was my first on this particular SoCal trip.  I was excited since I thought I might have a chance to swing by the HQ and/or Number One.  I’ve been to Number One before but this would be the first trip there during my “Year of In-n-Out” but alas I didn’t make it down.  Anyhow, as usual, a trip to In-n-Out is always a good sign and since they got my genex style Double Double right so I was happy and the trip proved productive.

Second time at this In-n-Out Burger in Napa in a week and this burger was just right – it almost looks like one of the shots you might see in an ad the way it’s so perfectly presented.  But of course that’s not gonna stop me from devouring it since I was pretty damn hungry at this point.  I had been shooting at Clos Pegase Winery earlier and there was a fancy dinner there in the caves when I was finishing up of course that makes my hunger even worse so I jetted down to get this double double to satisfy my hunger.  Definitely hit the spot! Wed May 12, 2010: In-n-Out Burger #18: Grilled Cheese 2x cheese!

So believe it or not this was my first ever In-n-Out Burger Grilled Cheese!  And of course I had to go overboard and get it with extra cheese which is actually two extra slices since it comes with two by default.  I forgot to get it Animal Style since I wasn’t sure if I should do that or not with a grilled cheese, although my friend Leigh reminded me of that on twitter! I know my next one will definitely be Animal Style.  The grilled cheese was tasty, but I was definitely missing the meat too! Continue reading Wed May 12, 2010: In-N-Out Burger #18 – Grilled Cheese

Same rental car and the second trip to In-n-Out in the Dodge Caliber.  I wonder if the rental car folks will be able to smell it in the morning when I return the car?  This Double Double was courtesy of a photo shoot down at the Sofitel in Redwood City.  Coming back up from the shoot I had my assistant stop off at In-n-Out for a requisite reward.  Eating in the car is still a bit of a challenge for me, but I was able to keep everyone off myself.

Gotta love 4:20 – it’s a popular ‘holiday’ in San Francisco, and of course I like to enjoy it myself so today was pretty awesome since we had our planning meeting for our April Mistakes bash this weekend and did some decorating and such and afterwards, since I had a rental car for my shoot tomorrow, I mentioned I could give anyone a ride home, but that I’d be going to In-n-Out for dinner first.  @megan and @aprilini were totally in so we drove down to the Daly City In-n-Out Burger.

The line at the drive through was ridiculous for some reason at 10pm on a Tuesday night so we were just thinking – well, In-n-Out is popular!  Then when we got inside it was packed too and only after we were seated and looking around did we realize there were a lot of stoners in there.

*lightbulb*

Duh, 4-20 = stoners =  hungry – and no doubt In-n-Out is a fave so we observed everyone even more closely and it was pretty funny to see the impact that 4:20 had on the line at In-n-Out.  I’d be curious as to whether there’s a bump in sales on that day each year… hm…  Well in honor of that and the last year of my thirties I decided on a 3×3 which totally hit the spot!
